Mini-Course: Preparing for School-Entry

2 - Preparing Your Child for School-Entry

Help your child build social skills

You can help develop your child's social skills in a variety of ways. Below we describe a gradual method. Depending on your child's current comfort level, you may be able to skip some or all of the steps outlined.

First, encourage your child to smile at one person each day. Once your child feels comfortable smiling at new people when unprompted, it is time to move to the next step.

Next, encourage your child to speak to others. For example, have your child practice saying hello unprompted to at least one person a day.

At the end of each day, have your child describe the experience.
  • Did the other person respond?
  • Did your child feel comfortable in the situation?
    • If not, what emotions did your child experience?
