Mini-Course: Preparing for School-Entry

1 - Gathering Information for School-Entry

Gather information from the school

Once you have identified the school your child will enter, introduce yourself and your child to the school personnel, as you will work with them during the entry process and beyond. Try to initiate this contact six months or more before school-entry, perhaps during the spring semester of the year before your child will enter school.

Often, the principal is a good starting point. The principal can refer you to other people critical to the entry process, like the district's itinerant teacher of the deaf or the school audiologist.

At this point, we recommend you keep the introductions brief and simple. Conduct the introduction by phone or in person.

During these introductions, you will both share information about you and your child and obtain information from the school to help you plan the school-entry process.
