Mini-Course: Preparing for School-Entry

1 - How Hearing Works

What is Sound?

Sounds exist as waves or vibrations in the air caused by movement of an object. For example, when a bell rings, the movement of the bell's clapper striking the sides of the bell disturbs the air and triggers sound waves.

Different objects make different sounds because of two characteristics of their sound waves--frequency and amplitude--as illustrated on the next page.
