Mini-Course: Challenging Situations

Social challenges: Lack of confidence

Children with language delays may be unsure whether others will understand them. They may hesitate to answer questions, contribute to classroom discussions, or participate in group social activities.

Remember that some kids are just shy. However, if you believe the child is missing certain phonemes or sounds in the classroom contact the school audiologist, if available, or explain the situation to the parents. This may mean that the program map for the cochlear implant needs updating.

If the child seems embarrassed by his or her speech, let the child's parents know. It is possible that the child would benefit from seeing a speech therapist.
