8 - Social Integration of a Child with a Cochlear Implant

Model clear communication

As the teacher, you are the model for your students' behavior, so be sure to model proper communication skills for speaking with a child with a cochlear implant.

Be sure that you:
  • Have the child's attention before speaking
  • Face the child
  • Stand at a comfortable distance - 1 ½  to 3 feet away is best
  • Wait for competing noises to lessen before speaking
  • Speak up, but don't shout
  • Do not cover or obscure your mouth when speaking
  • Prompt your students to use the same techniques when speaking to their classmate with a cochlear implant.
