Mini-Course: Preparing for School-Entry

4 - Final Preparation for School-Entry

Prepare your child for the first day of school

The first day of school will be hectic, so plan ahead. Rehearse what will happen in school with your child. Consider reading books with your child that discuss or illustrate positive school experiences to help him or her understand the environment. Talk about school in upbeat, positive tones, and be sure to give your child an opportunity to ask questions about what school will be like.

Below are some more tips:
  • The night before the first day of school, follow your regular nightly routine, and be sure your child gets enough sleep.
  • Complete a sound check of your child's equipment before leaving for school.
  • If you've arranged it with the teacher, plan to arrive at school 20 minutes early to find the classroom, conduct the sound check, confirm that the accommodations are in place, and identify the best seating options for your child.
  • Plan a special dinner or treat for your child to celebrate the first day of school.
