Mini-Course: Challenging Situations

6 - Hearing and Language Challenges

Hearing challenge: Filtering important information in a noisy environment

Classrooms are noisy. Sounds bounce off hard surfaces, like floors, desks and chalkboards. Children talk, laugh, and sing. Fish tanks bubble and air conditioners hum.

In these noisy situations, a child may fail to pinpoint important information like the teacher's voice.

A teacher of a student with a cochlear implant explains the hearing challenges that students with cochlear implants face in the classroom, and how to help the child succeed.
