Mini-Course: Preparing for School-Entry

2 - Preparing Your Child for School-Entry

Encourage your child to initiate conversations

Once your child is comfortable smiling and greeting people, encourage him or her to engage in small talk with others. Encourage your child to smile, greet, and make a comment to at least one person a day.
  • Practice comments ahead of time to prepare for the experience. Your child can comment on a variety of everyday issues, such as the weather, the time, the other person, or common sport activities.
  • Once again, speak to your child about the experience at the end of each day.
    • Discuss your child's emotions as well as the other person's response to the interaction.
A good way to practice these social skills is by setting up play dates for your child to encourage further growth.
