Mini-Course: Preparing for School-Entry

1 - Gathering Information for School-Entry

Information to obtain

Obtain the following information from the school:
  • What is the school's experience working with children with cochlear implants? Has the school previously enrolled a child with a cochlear implant?
  • Who are the personnel that you will work with regularly? What is their contact information?
  • What is the process for scheduling and conducting meetings (for example, meetings to discuss an Individualized Education Plan (IEP), which helps document and implement your child's specific accommodations)?
    • With whom will you meet to discuss your child's entry into school?
    • With whom will you meet to discuss your child's progress throughout the year?
    • What is your role in the meetings?
  • What other information does the school need from you to plan for your child's entry?
Keep notes of who you meet, what was said in the conversation, and the contact information for each person. Start a specific binder or notebook in which to store these and subsequent notes. Having all the information together in one place will help you stay organized.
