3 - Working with the School

Establishing an IEP or Section 504 plan

United States law requires that public schools must provide free and appropriate education in the least restrictive environment to all individuals between the ages of 3 and 21 years, regardless of disability level.

Two particular legal mechanisms, IEPs and Section 504 plans, are in place to help children who are deaf secure the educational accommodations they need. We describe these mechanisms on the following pages.
