Mini-Course: Preparing for School-Entry

3 - Working with the School

Review classroom adjustments the teacher can make

When meeting with the teacher, ask to see the classroom space, if possible. Once you have surveyed the room, explain that simple changes to the classroom will better support the hearing of your child. The changes fall into five categories:
  • Improving acoustics
  • Reducing background noise
  • Optimizing seating
  • Creating a visual classroom
  • Enforcing classroom rules
Refer to the information sheet entitled Arranging a classroom for a child with a cochlear implant for a list of how the teacher can make these changes. Give the teacher a copy of this document, and/or refer them to the Arranging your classroom for a student with a cochlear implant mini-course for teachers.
